Roger K. Bentley:
After completing his doctorate, Roger Bentley spent 3 years doing academic research at Oxford University before entering the dyestuffs manufacturing industry as a development chemist. He then moved into production, and eventually became manager of a chemical plant. Three years were spent commissioning an intermediates plant in Germany. Eventually he spent 7 years as Loss Prevention Manager at Ciba-Geigy's plant in Manchester, where he had responsibility for the occupational hygiene function and emergency planning and response, as well as advising management and colleagues on all aspects of safety. He dealt with all health and safety liability claims against the company.
Since 1994 he has worked as a Safety Consultant, advising organisations on safety management, investigating accidents and causes of occupational disease, providing training courses and as an expert witness. His most recent major assignment was on a technical assistance project in Russia. He has written safety reports to comply with legislation on the control of major accident hazards, and prepared emergency plans. Most of his clients are in the chemical industry. He is also a director of a security company specialising in providing manned guarding for the chemical industry.
He has been elected as a director on the Council of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, and represents them as a moderator at Salford University. He is also an examiner for the National Examining Board in Occupational Health and Safety.
He is a tutor for RRC distance learning courses and has lectured on Occupational Health and Safety at Bolton Institute and Stoke on Trent College, on Major Accident Hazards and Emergency Planning for the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, and on the Storage and Handling of Chemicals for the Chemical Hazards Communication Society. He has written a review of Safety Management and Risk Assessment in the Chemical Industry (publisher Informa Chemicals), a Handbook on Workplace Exposure Limits (publisher Croner), several short articles, and is joint author of guides on Transportation of Dangerous Goods, the Emergency Response (Emergency Planning Society) and Safety Data Sheets (Chemical Hazards Communication Society).
