Previous Employment
Post-doctoral research assistant to Professor Sir Ewart Jones at Oxford
University (1966-69). Concurrently held a tutorial appointment at New
College.
In 1969 I joined the Clayton Aniline Company in Manchester as a research
and development chemist, later transferring to production, and then becoming a
plant manager
In 1981 I was seconded to Schelde Chemie in Germany, where I was
involved in commissioning a new plant.
I returned to Manchester in 1984, and after a further couple of years of plant
management was appointed Head of Safety and Security. Clayton Aniline,
or Ciba Specialty Chemicals as it was shortly to become, was a CIMAH top-tier
site. I personally worked on the safety report and emergency procedures, as
well as having responsibility for all aspects of safety including occupational
hygiene. I held this position until 1994 when I took advantage of a severance
scheme to set up my own businesses.

Consultancy Assignments
Until the end of 1998 I continued to act as a safety consultant to Ciba
Specialty Chemicals at Clayton, and fulfil for them the legal requirements
of a "competent person" as defined in the Management of Health &
Safety at Work regulations. I provided training for their employees utilising
the IOSH 'Managing Safely' and 'Working Safely' courses, and have also
presented these courses to other organisations.
Other major clients include: Zyma, Novartis, Colin Stewart Minchem, FMC,
Great Lakes Chemical Corporation, Zeneca, Syngenta. In 2001/2 I worked with IMC Consulting on an EC technical assistance project in Russia.
I have undertaken smaller assignments in the manufacturing, retail, energy,
food and hotel industries, and taught on NEBOSH certificate and diploma courses.

Current Portfolio
I provide expert opinion in litigation involving exposure to chemicals causing dermatitis, cancer, and respiratory diseases, also injuries caused by explosions, fires, manual handling and falls.
I present IOSH professional development courses on major accident hazards, emergency planning and the dangerous substances & explosive atmospheres regulations, and a course on the storage and handling of chemicals for the Chemical Hazards Communication Society.
I act as an examiner for the National Examining Board in Occupational Safety and Health, and lecture on their certificate and diploma courses at Stoke on Trent College, covering chemical related topics. I am also a tutor for RRC distance learning and web-based courses.

Professional Qualifications
In 1963 I graduated in Chemistry (IIi Hons.) from Leeds University where I was
also awarded a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry in 1966.
During 1988 I attended five course modules each of a week at Loughborough
University, together with course work, examinations and a project, for a
post-graduate level diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Management.

Professional Bodies
Since my student days I have been a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (previously the Chemical Society) and am now a Fellow and Chartered Chemist.
Fellow of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, elected to the Management Council in 1998, and a Registered Safety Practitioner. A scheme of continuing professional development is followed. I represent the Institution as an external examiner at Salford University.
Founder member of the Society of Expert Witnesses. Member of the Chemical Hazards Communication Society, the Emergency Planning Society, and the Society of Industrial Emergency Services Officers.
